1 pixel bevel tutorial in Photoshop
This is a really cool effect, and its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. It is used a lot in interfaces and looks cool as borders.  I figured this out my self so don't copy this tut!

*Edited 5th January to make more understandable!

First download this file and save it into your photoshop actions folder (most likely to be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Presets\Photoshop Actions\) depending on your ps version.

1) Paste the image of xtina into photoshop by right clicking and selecting copy, then open up photoshop and click new, ok then paste.

2) Make a new layer, fill it with the darkest colour for your border, then go to select > all.  Now go to Window > Actions and in the actions palette, click on the blue arrow in the top right hand corner and go to Load Actions.  Double click on ContractCanvas.atn.  Then click on contract canvas (v1.2) in the main box and press the play button.  When a command pops up write in 1.

3) Keep the selection selected then choose a colour that's quite a bit lighter than your darker border colour (not too close to white!) Then use the bucket tool to fill in the middle.

4) Keeping it selected go to select > modify > contract and type in 3, delete, then fill the rest in the darkest border colour (the same colour as in step 2)

5) Go to select > modify > contract and type in 1, click ok, then hit delete.  Then go to select > deselect.  You should have this.

6) Now with the magic wand tool, select the middle of the border (the biggest, lightest colour in your border) and go to edit > copy then edit > paste this will paste it into a new layer.

7) Go to Layer > Layer style > Bevel and Emboss, make the settings like this and this Then click on styles (in the top left hand corner) and click on New Style... and name it something like, 1 pixel bevel.  This is so you can use it next time without having to set it up each time. Now click on ok and look you have a bevel border!

8) Using the style you made in step 7: Next time when you come to step 7 you can simply click on (Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options) Then click on Styles (top left hand side) you should see your style there (probably the last style) click on it and click ok.  It just saves u from typing in all those bevel and emboss settings each time.

*Optional: I do this just so I don't have lots of layers.  Basically I'm merging the border layers into one layer.  So in the layer pallete, click on the eye on the bottom layer to hide it.  Click on the layer above, then go to (Layer > Merge Visible) Then click back on the bottom layer, you should only have 2 layers now :)

Once you have got the hang of this you can make anything bevel, using the same method I did this

To do what I have done in the picture above create a new layer above the bottom layer but below the top layer (basically in make it the middle layer).  Select the strip you want to bevel with the select tool, fill with the darkest border color, go to (Select > Modify > Contract) and type in 1.  Then fill with the main border colour and Deselect.  Then select the middle bit with the magic wand.  Copy and paste it onto a new layer and set the layer style (like I explained in step 8)

Here is another example I did while running through the steps :)

And a slight variation
