Using patterns in Photoshop
You can get patterns from quite a few places, search for "photoshop patterns" on google, or download some of mine! I am going to use my vector pattern set!

1) I have just downloaded the set to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Presets\Patterns, so now open up a new document, whatever size you want! I am going to draw a pink circle, like so

2) Go to Layer > Layer style > Pattern overlay then click on the arrow in the pattern box pointing down and then click the other arrow in the box that opens pointing right and then click Load Patterns... {Screenshot} Simply double click on the vectorpatterns.pat.

3) You will see that some new patterns have appeared, choose the one that takes your fancy.  If you don't like the colour, try changing the blend mode at the top to 'overlay' or experiment! also change the opacity to whatever you think looks best and the scale (Keep the preview button checked)

Here I used blend mode as overlay and opacity at 30% scale at 100%

4) Fancy some more fun? try making a gradient pattern! after completing the above steps go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient... Set it up like this then click ok and do something like this.  I end up with this

Experiment with the settings and you can come up with something totally original :)
